a conscious cup of coffee

there is a coffee cafe/roaster not to far from where i live called conscious cup––a name that came from their philosophy about coffee buying and the environment. the web site says this:

"we purchase premium green coffee, teas and chocolate through trade programs that better benefit farmers and encourage organic, sustainable agriculture."

i think their coffee is delicious, and if i remember correctly, it was voted "best in the county". the shop is a quaint space with cafe tables and chairs and some comfortable lounge furniture––a couch and some armchairs and a coffee table. good music, good reading materials, an overall nice atmosphere.

in the front of the shop, they have a very large coffee roaster. this is why the coffee is so good. they purchase all their beans fresh by the burlap-sack-full and roast them right in the store.

unfortunately, this place is not walkable for me, so we tend to not go very often since we have to drive about five minutes. but i'm sure i would go every day if it was down the street like the five or so other coffee places near me.

we went yesterday morning, and i decided to bring the camera. glad i did. there was so much to photography. i especially loved the burlap sacks of beans everywhere. they made for some fun and interesting pictures in my opinion.

can you just smell the wonderful roasted beans? oh, now i'm craving coffee! i just might have to go get some. in fact, i'm on my way right now. care to join me?

I'd love to join you! I'm a huge proponent of fair trade coffee and buy it whenever I can, for home use and when out. We have some coffeehouses that sell fair trade exclusively. Coffee is big business and coffee farmers are usually exploited.

Those photos are great! I bet they would like to hang a few there, don't you think? It makes me want to go to Central America or something...

candace, i actually thought of framing one of these and giving it to them for their shop. but then i wondered if that would be too presumptuous. :)

I am ready for a good cup of coffee - great photos. I think you could gift them a framed photo - it's a nice gesture and the photos are well done.

Pour a cup for me!

Georgia, I don't think it's presumptuous at all. After all, you're not insisting they hang it for all to see (but hopefully, they will)--it's a gift, they can do with it what they will. It is a nice gesture, I agree with Sandy.

Roasted yummy goodness. You are the second person who has brought this lovely shop to my attention. Next time down to the city, I might have to make a pit stop.

I work part time as a barista and am always trying new shops and roasters.

let me know, beth—i'll meet you over there.

i did not know you were a barista part-time. how cool! i have been thinking of doing that part-time myself. got to do something until i get something full-time.

Too bad I'm not a coffee drinker, it sounds really good! I like the shots of the burlap bags - very cool.

Georgia,

The photos are lovely and what you write about our cafe is heartwarming. We do have an employee who gets off at Pingree and rolls her longboard down to the cafe.

Best,
