needing...

the hardest thing for me about not working is having to put structure and order into my days and weeks. because there are no deadlines to meet. no boss looking over my shoulder for something. no clock to punch in and out of. no lunch breaks. no monday through friday. no "i better go to bed now... i have a long day tomorrow." no weekends. no days off. aside from missing a paycheck, not working might sound like a nice thing {especially if i was working}. but it's really a lot harder than i thought. it's work to make sure you structure your time so as not to become lazy or complacent. it's a test in discipline. a lot of people are experiencing that right now. several family members and friends of mine are also not working. i wonder if they struggle with this too. if you have never been without work like i was up until a few months ago, not having to get up and go to work every day may sound like a nice break. but i can honestly say––although i never thought i would say it––that i actually miss working and having a boss and getting up early on too little of sleep to go in and fight deadlines... and the list could go on. i really do miss it. the only thing i don't miss––nor will i ever––is driving in traffic. but patience is a whole other subject for another day. today i'll just stick to structure.

Well, I'm glad I have a job everyday because I know a lot of people who don't but--yes--not having to go to work always appeals to me. I hate getting up every morning because I'm a nightowl and stay up way too late every night. But as a person who has been doing staycations long before they became fashionable--I know that when I take several days off with all these plans of things to do, I wind up staying up half the night, sleeping half the day, getting nothing done because I think I have all the time in the world to do it. So I've known for a long time that I need the structure of a job in order to get anything else done in my life. I always think how cool it would be to telecommute, too, but I have a sneaking suspicion that I wouldn't get a whole lot done then either. Structure, yes, I'm a reluctant fan of it, too.

I hope you get structure back very soon, Georgia.

you write so well, able to express feelings along with your photos. I am a teacher so the summer off is a welcome break to a very structured rest of the year.

I love routine as well. It's comforting. I think also that work makes us feel productive, which makes us feel good. I quit work after having my son and that provides a whole different kind of schedule and "boss" (hehe) but what I miss is that Friday feeling - that buzz around the office because everyone is excited it is the weekend.

(I left comment on your last post but it looks like it didn't save)

I think not working is a classic case of the grass is greener on the other side. It's nice to have time off but too much time off and one can become board.

It sounds like you are trying to keep routine in your day which is good and will serve you well when you do get back into the work force.

For me working full time and being the sole carer of 2 children is too much. Ideally I'd love to work 3 days a week. This would keep my mind stimulated but also give me more time with my children. Shortly after I separated from my husband I returned to work full time as has proven to be extremely inconsistent with paying child maintenance.

Nice post. I’m a freelance photographer and structure and flexibility are crucial. It would be so each to sleep-in some mornings, I need to be ready at the drop of a hat; things need to be ready, batteries charged, gas in the car, a plan B for the plan A etc. Structure helps keep it together. I need to be flexible because a job is a job and as a freelance photographer the call is for now. For the most part, things don’t get rescheduled around photographers.

boy do I need to work - it's making me crazy. i busy myself but sometimes all i want to do is crawl back in bed. the one big change i can see is that i've fallen into staying up late and sleeping until 8ish. not a good habit as it will kill me when i do get a job.

I agree...I suck without a schedule or structure !!
when the kids were little they were my schedule in everything that I did, so it made it easy to be home with them all these years....

now that they are "old" I'm on my own and somedays I just walk around in circles like a penguin with lots of things to do, but with nothing that has to be done "now"....

but do I want a boss over my shoulder....NO WAY !

i work from home and have to structure my own time... i am incredibly bad at this... i often have to set my own deadlines but am so much better when i have a deadline imposed on me... it is not easy being at home as the days all roll into one and it's hard to get on with anything when i see tha housework that needs to be done ... i find i am better when i have activities to puncuate my day. the good thing about having the girls is that i can never sleep in! maybe with both of you being at home just now ... you can help and energise each other... i do hope you both find work soon.
