when two are better than one.

winter fog

i've been bitten by the texture bug, for which i hope there is no cure. i've always wondered how people get such yummy images that are rich with texture. i mean, i basically knew how, but i wondered where they were getting the textures they use. did you know flickr is full of photographers who have free textures for you to use? i did not know until recently.

i was e-mailing back and forth with one of those photographers {who gave me the texture used on my above photo }, and she mentioned how some purists or critics of textures may point out how it is sort of a cop out to use them, because there are some textures that make any photo look better, even not very good photos.

while that may be true, it does not discount that they can also make a great photograph look better. or not even just always better. sometimes, just different. and that's okay! i happen to love my original image {below } without the texture. but when i saw the texture, i thought it would look so nice with this photo.

and even if it is true that textures are just a tool to make average photos look good, what is wrong with that. we agreed that this is a good thing. i mentioned how it happens everywhere in life... think of a news anchor that is just alright on their own, but put with another anchor who is just okay, they both become great because of the chemistry they have together.

or think of song lyrics that might only be average to most people, but when put with a good arrangement of notes and rhythms, they both turn into a beautiful song. i could probably think of some other examples. maybe you can too??? let me know if you do. but you get the point.

anywho... as i said, i've been bitten. i've not really posted any of my texture images here {until now }. but i've put up several over the past week and a half or so on my flickr site. i'll try to add some more here over the weekend.

as promised, here is the original shot.

this week has been gray, foggy, misty and rainy so far, so i thought i would post this winter fog photo. can you believe winter is almost over?!? only nine days until spring! i went out without a coat tonight. it was an amazing feeling!

happy friday, everyone. have a beautiful weekend!

I agree with you on the texture tools for photos. Or any tool for that matter. It is simply "painting" on your own work of art! Nothing wrong with that. I love both of your photos. But the one with texture is so much more. It emotes such feeling. I love it!

Agreed. I haven't played much with texture, but when I have, it's FUN. Beautiful images, the both of them!

I'm a huge fan of textures... a very dear friend of mine (www.mistymawn.typepad.com) uses them extremely well and got me hooked as well. I haven't posted many either but play with them quite often... I have a few that I should send your way via email... I'll work on putting that together this weekend for you ;-)

And as far as those purists? Well, whatever makes them happy... your original picture is splendid and the texture just takes the viewer in a new/different direction...it's like adding accessories on to an outfit in my opinion.

playing with textures myself these days...I think it makes a photograph more like a piece of art...not for the purists I suppose, but just another way to express ourselves, and what we love to look at.
Beautiful photo by the way...

Nice job. As an artist, you use whatever tool you need to to achieve the look you want.

it's interesting how you can change the mood of a photo with textures ...
