my rock

a rock i found while exploring one day—
or rather, it found me.
stopping to look,
i was held by its unlikely beauty.
different,
dark,
imperfect,
but
glistening
though
weathered by years
so perfectly,
so beautifully.
clearly meant to be near water
just as water longs to run around its surface.
plainly comfortable in the soil
of the melted snow-soaked earth.
embraced by the ground
readily,
easily,
happily.
one accepts the other
as the other accepts the one.

i kept returning to see the rock,
as i am drawn to beauty.
still i am held.
captivated.
motivated.
invigorated.
others might not stop to see it,
for they may not see what i see.
some may stop because they saw me stop.
but the matter is not what they think.
it's not just a rock.
it is a beauty that i am deeply fond of.
i will leave it where it found me.
but i will keep it.
always.

Years ago, during a questioning crossroad in my life, I walked the beach and found a rock that spoke to something inside me.
I took it home and polished it. It resides on my desk at home and every time I see it, I stroke it and remember the crossroad and the path I chose.
