album cover

i was updating my side column on my jorjah-b blog today. i have a spot where i list what i am currently listening to for musical inspiration—at home, and work and in the car. it says who the artist is and the album name, and there is a small image of the album cover with each. well, since i am currently unemployed, i had to update {remove} what i was listening to at work.

i realized it would have looked funny to have no image, so i decided to use one of my own photos for a placeholder. after i picked the image, and put the letters "tba" on it, i thought it looked like it actually could be an album cover—for a band named tba???—well, you get the idea. i sort of liked it, and i'm fond of the photo. so i decided it could go on my photo blog, too. the type treatment would need some work if this was a real album cover. i just kept it basic for the sake of readability.

this photo was from a drive home from work one night. the sunset was so cool, but it was so dark by that point, that all of my images were blurry. however, some of them turned out so neat, that i started to purposefully take more shots of the lights that seemed to be dancing or speeding. the photos almost look like abstract paintings—which i love in a photo. i will post the rest of the shots that go with this one tomorrow. this fake album cover shot is just a teaser.

i think it would be a blast to design album covers. especially because it is such a diverse art form with so many random band and album names. the sky is the limit to what you could do. or even just being a professional photographer for album cover photo shoots—kind of a fun gig, hah?

somebody else must have thought this was cool, too—have you seen that note/tag floating around on facebook lately {that is, if you are on facebook}?

i was tagged to participate. here are the instructions:
  1. go to "wikipedia." hit “random... read more... read more” or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
the first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.
  2. go to "random quotations" or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
the last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.
  3. go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days” or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
the third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
  4. use photoshop or similar to put it all together.
i did one and thought it turned out pretty cool. i'm gonna break my own rule and post it below—even though it is not one of my own photos. {it's okay, because it's just a secondary image—the primary image in this post is still mine.} if i knew whose photo it was, it would provide a credit.

it's hard to read the album name—it's "and you will find it". band name is "old st. john's county jail". what a great shot i found on flickr for it, hah? i can't remember which flickr site it is from. other wise i would provide a credit link.

do you ever take shots that you look at and think, "this would be cool on the cover of an album"? if so, i'd love to see it. leave me a link in the comments.

I did this and read a post from someone on flickr about their copyright being violated so I took mine down. I need to do it again but with one of my own shots maybe?

you would be a great cd cover designer.

good point, Char. i would never recommend someone doing this if they were designing an album cover for real. but i guess even using it for a fake, fun cover experiment might violate some peoples wishes and copyrights for their photos.

on another note, thanks for the compliment! :)

yes i think designing album covers is fun. i've done several for a piano composer and one as a advertising promo.
I love your first photo. it is perfectly suited for an album cover.

tba sounds good, I'd go see them. I'd like to see you come up with a t-shirt. :)
