a sneak peek + "drive-by shootings"

i thought i would give you one sneak peek into my florida pictures {since i'm still trying to sort through and organize them}. it's not a very good photo—but it's just a teaser, and it is also a segue into a post that i had started and planned to publish before i went on my trip but never got around to. more about that in a bit.

first i'll explain this shot. like i said, it's not ground-breaking photography—in fact, it's quite unplanned. this was taken from the back seat of my father-in-law's car after being picked up at the sarasota airport. as we approached the main road that runs along the gulf on our way to long boat key, i was so excited about my first view of the gulf since we landed, i just started shooting impromptu. it turned out to be one of my favorite photos. even though you can not see much water, i loved the clouds.

i realized last week that i like to take these "en route" type of pictures very often—whether driving or just riding. it's a thrill to try to capture something while moving. {much more safe when i am the passenger instead of the driver, i know.}

my sister has a book called drive-by shootings. it's about the photography of david bradford—a new york city cab driver and photographer who captures wonderful images while driving through the streets of new york. because of her discovery of this photographer's work, she made her flickr username "drive-by shootings". i had not heard of the book, and i found this to be very clever. i asked if i could use it for my blog, since i love to take pictures while i drive and find that i post so many of them.

that is when she told be about the book and when i researched it a little. his work really is so interesting, and he has a great web site, as well. so, although i can not take credit for the post category name, i am creating a new tag/button for these posts. like i said, i find myself posting them often. even though they are not great images technically, there is just an energy and vibe to many of them that really draws me in. often they are blurry, but there is a spontaneous quality to them that i love.

just last week, i took these {below}—some on my way to my mom's house and some as i rode to and through milwaukee. i'll also be tagging my previous posts with these kind of shots, so they will be viewable by clicking on the "drive-by shootings" button in the right-hand column of my blog page.
